BACKGROUND The AGOA Forum for 2010 will be held in two parts. The opening ceremonies and plenary sessions will take place in Washington D.C. on August 2-3. The second segment of the forum will take place in Kansas City, Missouri from August 5-6. August 4 will be a travel day. Cost of travel to Kansas City will be covered by each country; USG will NOT/NOT pay for travel or accommodations in either city. However, USG will hold rooms in Kansas City at discounted rates (per diem) at the Marriott Downtown, 200 West 12th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64105, Phone: 1-816-421-6800. Delegations are requested to contact the hotel directly for reservations.
Washington D.C., August 2-3
The African Growth and Opportunity Act mandates an annual Forum to discuss broad trade topics between Africa and the United States. Acting upon lessons learned from previous Forums, we have abolished breakout sessions, which, because of their large number, participants saw as diluting their ability to attend the many sessions of interest to them. This year, the Washington portion will be structured as a series of plenary sessions to allow for more in-depth discussions of issues among Forum attendees. The discussions will focus on a number of crucial trade and economic issues, including, but not limited to: improving intra-Africa trade; strengthening and expanding US-African trade and investment relations; and Africa’s competiveness in global trade. Of interest to many Ministers will be discussions on coming changes to USG preference programs.
Kansas City, Missouri, August 5-6
The second part of the Forum in Kansas City (Aug 5-6) will begin with a breakfast meeting and roundtable discussion with attendees and be followed by meetings with American businesses as well as site visits to local companies. By hosting participants in the Midwest we seek to revitalize the Forum; enhance the plenaries by allowing meetings and discussions that foster business relationships with African visitors; attract U.S. investors, buyers and exporters to the Sub-Saharan African market; and facilitate movement up the value chain for African products. Kansas City will not replace any of the three independent Forum events (meetings with government, civil society, and private sector), but build upon them by convening participants from each group together to discuss broader trade opportunities.
